This top-class theatre is known across Europe for its high-quality shows, ornate Renaissance façade and dazzling ceiling frescoes.

The Burgtheater is found in the heart of Vienna, and is a hugely important cultural centre for the city. Indeed, it is said to be the most significant theatre in the German-speaking world, attracting the biggest shows and most prestigious companies to perform their productions. Its reputation is matched by the lavish design of the plasterwork, complementing the lovely staircase and stunning paintings.

First built in 1741 on the instruction of the powerful Empress Maria Theresa, the theatre started out life as a queen’s feasting hall. In 1888, the current theatre was put in place, and went on to be restored after being damaged during the Second World War. In the present day the Burgtheater has gone from strength to strength, and is acknowledged as one of the foremost in Europe.

Shows are held on a year-round basis. Make sure to time your arrival to get here early so that you can absorb the regal ambience of your surroundings, from the beautiful architecture to the façade on the celebrated Ringstraße. The statue of Apollo is most prominent among the many sculptures, and is accompanied by personifications of comedy and tragedy. Busts of famous writers are also on display, from Shakespeare to Goethe, both inside the building and out.

Making your way into the foyer, crane your neck backwards to revel in the majesty of the breathtaking ceiling murals above, painted by brothers Gustav and Ernst Klimt.

If you’re not here for a performance, there are daily tours of the building which can be enjoyed. Outside the tourist season, from September to June, limited English-language tours are run at the weekend.

The Burgtheater is found in central Vienna, opposite Rathauspark and City Hall. Tours are inexpensive, while prices for shows vary – more details of times and prices are available on the website. If you’d like to see a show, but are short of cash, there is often a small amount of standing room available at low prices. Alternatively, unsold tickets are frequently sold at discount prices the hour before a show.
