Less crowded than the famous Waikiki Beach, Ala Moana is 800 metres of pure golden sands and calm waters. It’s also of the safest places to swim on the whole island. Thanks to the offshore reef, the water here is calm year-round. The eastern end of the beach is popular with families. The sea bed is soft and sandy, making it the perfect place for children to splash around and play.
The beach is also a favourite with Honolulu locals who come to enjoy the fresh air and take some exercise. There’s free exercise equipment for all to use along the beach or you can work up a sweat with a run or a game of tennis. Go stand-up paddle boarding or swimming in the calm waters, or grab some roller blades and skate along the waterfront. Some of the best waves on Oahu’s south coast can be found offshore of Ala Moana, but during calmer weather, its coral reefs make it ideal for snorkelling or scuba diving.
The Park is also the perfect place to spend a lazy day. With plenty of open green spaces with shade provided by beautiful banyan trees, it’s a great spot to picnic, read a book or just hang out.
Head to Magic Island at the eastern end of the park to catch cultural performances and local events. If you happen to be visiting on 4th July, join in with the Independence Day celebrations and enjoy the dazzling firework display. And every May, Magic Island plays host to the beautiful Lantern Floating Festival.
Parking can be a bit of a problem at Ala Moana Beach Park, so get there early if you want to find a space, particularly at weekends and during the high season. Alternatively, take a bus from downtown Honolulu.
