First opened in 1871, the Royal Albert Hall has been a renowned venue of British music and culture ever since it was inaugurated as a tribute by Queen Victoria to her husband Prince Albert. The building’s Italianate architecture with its domed roof is an iconic sight, whilst the mosaic frieze around the exterior is a spectacle to behold.
Performing on stage at this prestigious venue is something artists worldwide aspire to. Many different acts and people have appeared here, from world-renowned classical stars to pop icons like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan. Today, the building hosts over 350 events every year, which include opera, pop, rock, ballet and comedy. In spite of the 5,500-seat capacity in its auditorium, seats fill up quickly, so plan ahead if you want to book any of the entertainment on offer during your trip.
Since 1941, it has been home to the BBC Henry Woods Promenade Concert, also known as ‘The Proms’ – a series of classical concerts held over eight weeks during the summer months, culminating in the patriotic spectacular, ‘The Last Night of the Proms’, televised across the world and drawing huge flag-waving crowds.
School tours are popular and community events are held here too, benefiting from the Royal Albert Hall’s commitment to education. The hour-long Front of House Tour will take you round the building as its inhabitants get ready for the evening’s show. You’ll also get the chance to see the Queen’s private suites and the Royal Retiring Room. Alternatively, the Victorian Experience Tour will give you an entertaining chance to uncover the hall’s 140-year history, perfect for younger visitors.
You can also explore the ground floor and its exhibitions on open days where you can see different kinds of artwork. Of course, you must look out for the bronze statue of Prince Albert across the road at the Albert Memorial.
Located in South Kensington, you can reach the Royal Albert Hall by getting the Underground to High Street Kensington, South Kensington, or Knightsbridge.
