The Central district is Hong Kong’s economic and financial powerhouse and home to countless government departments, legal offices and big-name multinationals. Celebrities, tourists and office workers all come together at the weekend to join Hong Kong’s biggest party in Lan Kwai Fong. The stretch between Wyndha Street and D’Aguilar street is where it all starts. Now home to over 100 bars and restaurants, the area was once populated by street hawkers and wedding arrangers. Although there are a number of stylish and upmarket restaurants, Lan Kwai Fong has something to suit all pockets. Most bars have a happy hour or spree hour. Happy Hour is between 5 pm and 9 pm, when you can make the most of two-for-one drink offers and heavily discounted food. The later Spree Hour begins at 10 pm, and sees drink prices dropping even lower. Despite the cheap food and drinks, you can end up spending a lot on service charges or tips, so keep these extra charges in mind, as well as the cost of entrance to some clubs. Menus and prices are in English, and many of the bar-staff are native speakers. The area is so popular with revellers, that some of the clubs fill to capacity quite early on. However, this problem is soon solved by joining the street parties that spontaneously develop, with partygoers buying drinks from nearby shops and taking the fun outside! Lan Kwai Fong gets even rowdier during its very own beer festival, and holds carnivals and giant street parties on occasions like Christmas, New Year and Halloween. When hunger hits, take yourself to nearby Wing Wah Lane, and tuck into Chinese, Malaysian, and Western cuisine from the various budget restaurants and food stalls. The best way to get to Lan Kwai Fong is by metro. Get off at Central MTR station and once through Exit D1, turn right onto Pedder Street. Keep on walking until you get to Queen’s Road Central and then turn left onto Aguilar Street.
