Booked this last minute for our wedding anniversary, I added a message on booking to say as such. When checking in we got a free room upgrade and a two complimentary drinks. Room and bed were large, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was nice and clean. Had robes and slippers(needed as bathroom tiles were cold!)

The Grand Hotel is in an excellent part of town. It is easily walkable to restaurants, the St Nikolas Market, and the shopping mall. The room itself was basic, but clean. The bar was welcoming and the staff friendly

Overall it was shocking, i had to change rooms in the evening and was met with a young rude boy boasting about his wage. Day staff lovely but he was awful, ruined it for me.

I thought other reviewers were perhaps just being a bit negative based on reviews I read and I went with an open mind, but I have to be honest and say I would not stay there again. It is not a very friendly or welcoming hotel. The foyer is beautiful, but the staff are the heart of a place and it just did not have a friendly or welcoming feel. The room was fine, but not worth the money it cost to stay. The walls are thin, you so will hear other guests. Great location, just a shame it doesn't have a nice feel to the place.

The person who checked us in lacks customer service. Don’t expect someone who is over enthusiastic but a bit better personality would help. I don’t understand why they take the card to pre authorise the check in payment and when when you check out they take the card again. Surely if a card is pre authorised it just takes the payment. This is how it worked in all other hotels I have stayed at On leaving we were giving a validated car park ticket which was great but it didn’t work. And when I went back to ask about it the aptitude of the staff member was why am I asking this. The hotel itself is lovely; the room was stunning with coffee tea amenities supplied; the bathroom spacious although surprised that the shower itself has no shampoo or shower gel supplies which you would expect to see in a hotel of this standard. We didn’t use the bar area so can’t comment but the general cleanliness of the hotel was lovely and it’s situated in a perfect location for access to the main shopping area and night life.

During storm Darragh - freezing cold weather & gale force wind, I paid over £200 for a room with zero heat. Broken thermostat, a tiny radiator (that was pointless), and a super thin summer duvet. I called front desk around 6 times with no answer. I had to go down and see the front desk to ask for blankets and heat which were provided about an hour later. Even with these additions and being fully dressed (with socks on), I was absolutely freezing in bed. I’ve subsequently developed a bad cold. In addition, the room smelled bad, had stains all over the carpet and a dirty bath. Hotel staff advised me to claim a refund via Expedia who I booked the room through. I’ve contacted Expedia (over an hour in phone calls so far plus several emails), only for the hotel to delay their authorisation of my full refund. Update - after my third call to Expedia, the hotel are now refusing to refund the room even partially due to their “no refund policy - no exceptions”. How lovely. So you can pay over £200 for a freezing cold and dirty room and they are happy to take your money for it. Nice. It’s a good job I’m not elderly or immunocompromised, as that room would have finished me off otherwise. I have photos of the carpet/bath/ thermostat/radiator but no one seems bothered in seeing them. Who cares eh, “no exceptions”. I did enjoy breakfast which I paid an additional £17.95 for. I needed something substantial after the night of borderline hypothermia. Can someone please issue my refund.

The location is central but my room was very small and cold. The air conditioning unit didn’t heat up and the hotel had provided a small electric heater which gave off little heat. The carpets were worn and it was tatty No blankets to add an extra layer onto the bed. No mattress protector. Dialled front desk to enquire about heating but no response. I slept with pillows over the duvet to give an extra layer. In the morning the hairdryer stopped working half way through drying hair. Again no response from the front desk Definitely didn’t feel like good value for £175 a night without breakfast.

There was nothing I didn't like, in fact the staff went above and beyond when they discovered it was my wedding anniversary! The location is very convenient for the street markets and great food. Convenient parking in a secured adjacent multi-storey located through a ticketed barrier to the left of the frontage.

Really disappointed that we didn't have any information regarding the difficulty in locating the hotel by car, once we entered the city. We spoke too several people, who had the same experience. After an hour of trying to get our room warm with the air conditioning, we were told by the receptionist that it wasn't working properly and were given a electric heater also the extractor in the bathroom didn't work. It's a real shame, because the Hotel itself is exceptional

Hotel staff were very unhelpful, no where to be found when trying to check in and very abrupt and unhelpful. Made me feel very un welcome for the minute I walked I the door. had to deal with a party going on in the room next to me all night on a wednesday evening. Wasn't the best but in a great location.

I was favourably impressed by the hotel staff. In particular, Ioan, one of the barman (an eclectic mix of East London and Wales) was very friendly and helpful even to the point of recommending a local restaurant, which lived up to his recommendation. The hotel is old and looks like it may need a touch of TLC to its exterior but everything worked well enough such as the lifts and the bathroom fixtures and fittings. Overall my experience was positive and I would stay there again.

Not quite the mercure standard.
Check in experience was poor. No information given about the hotel or the facilities. We weren't asked or told about breakfastn or check out time. House keeping trolleys were left dotted around the floor with housekeeping laundry bags left by every 4 or 5 rooms. No kettle in the room, but milk, coffee, tea and cups were provided. But with no way to boil the water... Room was comfortable and bed was clean. Other room facilities were as you would expect from Mercure
