Ride in a cable car to the top of Bob’s Peak and enjoy sweeping views back across the lakes and mountains of Queenstown. Sip a hot drink at the mountaintop café, then choose from a range of exciting ways to enjoy the surroundings, including paragliding and luging.
Look up as you walk through Queenstown’s streets and you will almost certainly have a view of Bob’s Peak, reaching 1,476 feet (450 metres) into the sky above the town. Known for its stunning views and adventure sports, the mountain also features the steepest cable car in the Southern Hemisphere. The cable car will take you to the peak in just a few minutes.
Once at the top, take a moment to enjoy the panoramic views. Beyond the red roofs of the town you will see the expansive Lake Wakatipu, with the snow-capped peaks of the aptly named Remarkables providing a magnificent backdrop.
Daredevil visitors can opt to take part in a number of exciting sports. The luge course sends you flying down the mountainside on a small cart. Soar high across the town on a paraglider or explore the superb network of mountain bike trails that wind through the forests around the peak. Hikers will also find great terrain for trails of varying length and difficulty.
Refresh yourself with a drink or snack in the Skyline Café by the summit’s cable car station. Meals are also served here during the day. For a more formal afternoon or evening meal, try the Stratosfare Restaurant. This buffet-style restaurant has a dining room with excellent views of the lake and nearby mountains.
The base of Bob’s Peak is located close to the centre of Queenstown and is a short walk from most hotels. The cable car operates year-round, in all weather conditions. There is a small charge to ride the cable car.
