"Extremely remote (nearly a 3 hour bus ride from Kinegawa Onsen Train station into the winding mountains) which was both an adventure and unnerving. "Feels very upmarket from the entrance all the way to the room. The Japanese room I stayed in felt extremely large; like a 5-star hotel in Tokyo. The washbasin area looks modern and is well equipped with amenities, including a face steamer. Separate toilet is large. Bathtub is deep for a good soak with a nice view of the outside. "Mr. Ban runs a great guesthouse. If you're not vegetarian, get full board. It's a bit hard to find. Directions: Take bus from stop 1A at Nikko Train Station. Get off at stop 13. Walk up hill past Saitoh Dental Clinic. Walk to end of high stone wall on right. Continue past grassy area on right. A 2nd stone wall begins. Take right at first opening and bear right. Gasthof Ami is the big house at the far end. "

"Hotel is very close to all the world heritage sites right across from the parking lots. Walking distance to sites and train station The half board option is very nice. Dinner served in the room There is onsen on premise The hotel is somewhat older but that maybe part of its charm. We chose to stay in Japanese style room with tatami floor. The futon was much more comfortable than I thought. "

"A quiet, unassuming, and rustic inn on a small backroad, perfect for just getting away from the busyness of life. Staff are friendly and the location accomodates English speakers. Very close to convenient bus stations and nearby restaurants/tourist locations as well! Would go again."

"Small, very good affordable option along the river within walking distance of the main shrine sites and immediately adjacent to the trail to the Kanmangafuchi Abyss. Seems to be routinely booked by hiking tour groups, at least the two night we spent there. The hotel showed no availability on their website, but I was able to book a room on Expedia."

"Charming ryokan. Onsen on top floor has separate bathing for men and women, lovely way to begin and end the day. The rooms come with half board, so a very special dinner and breakfast filled with Japanese delicacies. Location is convenient, it’s about a 15 minute walk from the tobu Nikko station but you can take the number 1 bus that leaves you a block or so away. Quite convenient to the attractions. Lovely mountainous view with brook from the window."
