"We traveled to Otsu on a whim and chose Hotel Koo because we wanted to experience what it was like to stay in a traditional Japanese home. This did not disappoint- the accommodations we beautiful, serene and unusual. The town of Otsu is very quiet, but the people are amazing and the walkability down to Lake Biwa is great."

"overall experience was ok. It was a cool experience and only that. The room looked cool but it was dusty. The bathroom smelled like pee was soaked into the wooden floors. The a/c was a bit musty. There was no beef that was promised on the website. The Japanese dinner and breakfast consisted of fish and more fish so if you’re not a fan of fish, it would be hard for you to stomach. The staff were very nice and helpful though. I had many questions and they were able to answer all of them."

"Very traditional Japanese ryokan. Vast majority of guests are Japanese and so is authentic but also a bit weird… that’s to say, it doesn’t cater to foreigners. Can’t decide if the decor is stuck in the 1980s or if this is just Japanese taste. We had one of the fancy rooms with a private lounge and a private bath tub (could fit 2 small people) overlooking the mountain and lake. This was lovely. Public baths were on 3rd floor, but we didn’t use those. Stayed for 2 days, so ate 2 elaborate...

"Great value for the price. Hotel staff was so helpful even though they couldn’t speak very good English, they tried their best to communicate & accommodate! Breakfast can be ordered at extra cost & sent to the room, but 825yen for 3 sets of breakfast! Great price and the food was neatly prepared for the price they charge!"

"There was only one parking space left when I arrived at night time. Driving to the hotel was difficult as it's in a city with narrow roads and lots of people walking around and riding bikes. The staff were polite and spoke English. My room was clean and comfortable with air conditioning. Train station is within walking distance and it takes about 26 min to get to Kyoto station."

"If you are looking for a remote lake get away in northern Otsu this is ideal. This location suits the out door adventure types who want to be away from Otsu city. The lake was an amazing place to swim. What also would be a Great Lake side party atmosphere and relaxation with a group of friends. Amazing cleanliness despite the overall facility being quite old. "The rooms are large for Japanese hotels. When I requested a quiet room, it was changed immediately. Loved the bar for informal dinners. Close to bus and subway. Good shopping within easy walk. Friendly staff. Excellent French bakery next door."

"Loved the comfort in this hotel, beds and pillows were amazing. They provided pajama set which was so comfortable that we ended up buying it. Breakfast (western) was very nice with plenty of non-meat options. Japanese breakfast was sold out on both mornings we had breakfast there. Neat and clean room/bathroom, nice modern hotel (cinema room was very spacious). Would love to stay there again."
