Kahalu'u Beach Park

Explore the calm waters of this former royal beach, teeming with colourful marine life.

Commonly known as Snorkel Beach, the waters off Kahalu’u Beach Park are one of the best destinations for divers and snorkelers. The bay is protected from the open ocean by a thick sea wall, built during the reign of King Kamehameha. The sheltered beach was designated for sole use by the royal family, but now the calm waters are open to all visitors, and are especially suited to families.

The beach area offers excellent facilities, with swimming supervised by lifeguards. Food and drink outlets are close by, and there is a shaded pavilion to escape the sun. Public toilets and showers are provided onsite. As Kahalu’u is such a popular beach, it is worth arriving early to make sure you secure your spot on the sand. You’ll find yourself caught up in the wonderful, lively atmosphere, amongst locals and other travellers alike.

If you fancy exploring beneath the water’s surface, you can hire a mask and snorkel from any of the operators based near the beach. Don’t worry if you have never tried this before, as the wave-free environment makes it safe and accessible for complete beginners. Straight away you’ll discover brilliant underwater views. If you have more diving experience, you’ll be able to head out closer to the sea wall. You’ll find yourself amongst schools of brightly-coloured tropical fish, including the beautiful racoon butterfly fish which has made the coral reefs its home.

Kahalu’u Beach is also famous for its Hawaiian sea turtles. You may see them crawling across the sand amongst the many sunbathers, or if you are lucky, you may even be able to join them swimming through the seas.

Kahalu’u Beach Park is located approximately 9 kilometres south of Kailua Village, along Ali’I Drive. A limited public transport service runs to the beach, or you can take a taxi from the town. However, the beach is best reached by car, as long as you arrive in time to find a parking space. The beach is open all year round, and there is no charge for access.
