Independence Square is the biggest and most important square in Mendoza city. It was founded in 1861 to mark the centre of the new city after Mendoza had been destroyed by an earthquake. Four smaller public squares are located diagonally from each of the four corners of Independence Square, like the five pattern in a game of dice.
The square is a great place to start your visit to Mendoza, as many of the city’s major attractions are located here. Take a tour of the Municipal Museum of Modern Art to see some of the country’s best artworks or pay to light a candle at the Cuyo Shrine in the Basilica de San Francisco.
People-watching is another popular activity. Marvel at the musicians, magicians and comedians that entertain the crowds on weekends or simply sit on a bench beneath the shade of a tree and watch the locals going about their business. Visit on the weekend to attend one of the craft markets and haggle with local vendors for pottery, jewellery and specialty foods.
Take a stroll through Independence Square in the evening to see the plaza illuminated by ornamental lamps. Look for the large coat of arms of the city that is made out of lights. Stop for a typical Argentine meal of beef and wine at one of the many cafés or enjoy a drink in a local bar.
