Plaza San Martin was constructed following a devastating earthquake in 1861. City designers took advantage of the destroyed downtown area and built five squares to honour the city and its founders.
Pay a visit to the park to enjoy the green space amid the bustling city centre. See the monument to General San Martin, who played a leading role in Argentina’s struggle for independence from Spain. The bronze statue of San Martin depicts “The Liberator" astride his majestic horse.
Explore the busy surrounding areas of central Mendoza. Plaza San Martin is located in the city’s banking area. Stroll around and marvel at the majestic architecture of old financial buildings. Alternatively, walk to the other squares in Mendoza’s historic district and explore their memorials. Independence Square is large and particularly pretty, featuring a large central fountain and lively street shows to entertain the passing crowds.
Plaza San Martin can be reached on foot from downtown Mendoza. Alternatively, get there cheaply by bus or taxi. While you are in the area, find some of the region’s best restaurants and wine bars in the surrounding streets. Make sure to try a glass of Malbec produced by one of the local vineyards.
