Grant Park is a compact and well-maintained community green space in the heart of the scenic town of Galena. As in the rest of the town, history is important here in the park. You won’t walk far without finding some reminder of the past. Join local residents who come here each day for a run before work or a quiet evening stroll amid the flowers.
The park is named after the town’s most famous former resident, President Ulysses S. Grant, who lived here during the mid-19th century. Grant is a significant figure in U.S. history not only for his presidency but also for the key role he played, as a general, in winning the Civil War for the Union. Look for the signs of his legacy throughout the park. See the towering statue of the president and stop to look at the many Civil War-era cannons scattered around the park.
Use the park’s excellent facilities. These include a lovely pavilion and a gazebo for picnics, a children’s playground and a basketball court. An ornate fountain is one of the park’s star attractions. Remember to bring a camera to take photos of it, as well as the beautiful views of the Mississippi River that can be seen on a clear day. When you are ready to leave the park, follow the pretty footbridge that crosses the Galena River and leads to the downtown area.
Take the time to visit the fascinating Ulysses S Grant National Historic Site, located close to the park. This is the house that the president lived in during his time in the town. It has now been converted into an engaging museum. A statue of his wife, Julia Dent, stands outside.
Find Grant Park in a lovely location on the banks of the Galena River, close to the center of the little town. Come in summer to see this beautiful space at its finest, with carefully tended flowerbeds in full bloom.
