The Belvedere is a spectacular 19th-century redbrick mansion and gardens in Galena that can be toured in the warmer months. Totally air-conditioned, the majestic halls and corridors make for a welcome respite from the afternoon heat as well as offering a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era of affluence. On a visit to Belvedere Mansion, ring the doorbell without a reservation to ask for a guided tour of the building and its 22 rooms.
Arrive at the Victorian porch of this glamorous site, which was constructed in 1857. Enter the house and imagine it as it was around the time of the American Civil War. In the hallway you’ll see a lavish chandelier and an impressive grandfather clock. Next, study the period décor amid the exotic plants on the veranda.
Step into the Victorian dining room, replete with works of art and vintage furnishings. Many of the mansion’s rooms contain chandeliers, each with their own exceptional design. As you make your way through the bed chambers, take in the gilded mirrors, silk bedding and Damask drapes.
Step outside to view the fountain and floral displays of the Belvedere’s garden. Inspect the various seasonal blooms and spot rabbits and birds. Your guide will explain the history of the site, which was constructed to house the ambassador to Belgium, J. Russell Jones.
Tickets to tour Belvedere Mansion are half-price for kids. Tours are scheduled every 15 minutes from mid May through mid November, from late morning to late afternoon. Note that combination tickets are available which include entry to nearby Dowling House.
The Belvedere Mansion is just south of the center of Galena, on the eastern side of the Galena River. Drive northwest from the Tapley Woods Conservation Area for approximately 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) along Highway 20 to get here in less than 15 minutes. Make the most of your visit and explore the area for such gems as Linmar Gardens, the Chicago Athenaeum and Galena Grant Park.
