Cathedral of Saint Paul

Look skyward for the copper-clad dome of one of America’s largest churches, an elegant hilltop cathedral dedicated to the city’s namesake saint.

The Cathedral of Saint Paul sits high on a hill overlooking the city. A church has stood on this site since 1841, but the current construction opened its doors in 1915. Also known as the National Shrine of the Apostle Paul, the cathedral’s history is entwined with that of the Twin Cities. Explore the magnificent church, which has a façade inspired by Classical and French Renaissance themes and an interior illuminated by stained-glass windows and the glow of gold leaf. The cathedral was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and is a revered landmark on the St. Paul skyline.

Enjoy views of the beaux-arts landmark from the adjoining Cathedral Hill Park. The church has a beautifully symmetrical Classical Revival design, which incorporates a central dome that towers 186 feet (57 meters) into the sky. Walk into the cathedral’s grand nave and you’ll note the natural light that illuminates the interior. The cathedral’s beautiful rose window floods the transept with light, while the nave is brightened by 24 stained-glass windows.

Inside, you can see evangelical marble statues of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. There are six shrines dedicated to the patron saints of the European countries that settled the area around the city of St. Paul. The cathedral’s belfry contains five bronze bells from France. Admire the magnificent carved walnut case that covers the organ, which is decorated with carved angels and a statue of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music.

The Cathedral of Saint Paul is on Cathedral Hill in St. Paul’s southeastern section. Parking is available on the surrounding streets. Alternatively, reach the cathedral via the city’s public bus system. The cathedral is open daily from morning until evening. Tours operate once a day, except on Mondays and weekends. The cathedral is free to visit, however, donations are appreciated. Visit on a Wednesday evening to hear the cathedral choir rehearsing for their Sunday Mass performance.
