The grand home of the builder of the Great Northern Railway has rugged stonework, intricate decorations and beautiful period furnishings.

The James J. Hill House is an architectural landmark in the Historic Hill District of St. Paul. Completed in 1891, the house was a remarkable show of wealth for its time and today it is listed as a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Explore the rambling estate and enjoy the views of downtown St. Paul and the mighty Mississippi River. Tour around the house’s stately interior and check out a collection of works on display in the art gallery. Learn about the railway magnate who earned this lavish lifestyle by constructing the railway that ran from St. Paul to Seattle.

As you walk along the manor’s pathways skirted by green lawns, you’ll note its intriguing Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style. This style involves large and rugged stone bricks, pillars and wide arches. Enter the building and explore the restored rooms. James J. Hill’s engineering innovation meant that the house was fitted out with complex mechanical systems, including a hybrid system of electric and gas lighting. Stroll down the central hallway and note the intricate hand-carved woodwork that decorates panels fitted across the ceilings and walls.

An art gallery is spread over two floors of the house. You might see an exhibition of Minnesotan art or artwork collected by notable Minnesotan figures.

Continue exploring the first floor to find the music room, formal dining room, library and Hill’s office. Climb the grand staircase to reach the second and third floors, which contain richly furnished bedrooms.

The James J. Hill House is situated on Cathedral Hill, a short distance south of the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Take the bus to the cathedral’s bus stop or park in the nearby parking lot. Admission to the house includes access to the art gallery and a guided tour, which runs for 75 minutes. Tours depart every half hour. Discounted admission is available for children, students and seniors. You can also purchase gallery-only admission for a reduced fee. The house is open to visitors daily, except for Mondays and Tuesdays, while the gallery is open every day of the week.
