"Wonderful stay at this ryokan onsen hotel overlooking the ocean. Thoroughly enjoyed watching sunrise, while soaking in our private onsen bath from the balcony of our room."
"Very nice staff. However, there was black mold in the bathroom, the entire place is closed from 10am-3pm, it's hard to find the staff even during "open" hours, and it's far from the train station. It is very close to all of the 7 Hells and some of the best onsen in Japan."
"I have stayed in 12 hotels on this trip, and this is the friendliest, with the kindest staff. I needed an extra pillow and they brought it to my room within a few minutes, they got me a taxi for my bus out of town, they had better then usual English understanding and treated me very well. The property is a little old, and I noticed the other guests were mostly older people (I’m 44, most the others were over 60) so it is not a hotel for having a party, but for a high quality nights sleep, I...
"The buffet for both Dinner and breakfast is nice. My family enjoyed the prawns for steaming at our table. And also we could grill our food at out table for breakfast. Interesting and very fresh."
"We had a great stay at Ryokan Kiraku. First, the service is excellent! Even my son noticed: "Everyone is running!" They happily stored our bags when we arrived before check-in. Everything was explained clearly. The onsens were well-maintained, and we especially loved the ability to use the private onsen between certain hours, or reserve the family onsen.
The location was very convenient, less than five minutes to Kannawa bus station. It's also quite a reasonable walk to five of the...

"This property has a lovely 8th floor infinity pool public bath overlooking the bay. All rooms face the bay and had both a nice view and we're muiet - the ocean waves easily heard from your balcony which faced a public parks beach. Staff there was friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet had an excellent selection of both japanese and western dishes. "
"If you are looking to stay here, chances are you were trying to stay in Beppu but wanted to save money, and for the price the hotel is fine.
First things first, if you are taking the train, it is around a 20 minute walk from the station, but it mostly flat so it is easy. Staff were fantastic, and check in went great. The hotel was probably the best in Beppu back in the Showa Era (there is a second phone in the bathroom), however it is now clearly quite old and has a distinct smell, even inside my room. The carpet in the hallways was in rough shape, though the carpet in the room was clearly much newer. The air conditioner is either on or off, no control of the thermostat, so your choices are on, off, or open the windows.
My room was on the 11th floor, so the view was exceptional. Seeing the sunrise from up there made me feel like the room was worth double the price
All things considered, the price was fair, the hotel clean, and the service great, with the main downside for me being the smell."
"This was our first visit to beppu and first stay at this location. At first glance it looks older, but the staff met us halfway as we walked from the bus stop. This was the only hotel that did that and highlighted the start of a great stay with great service. They took us all the way to the front desk and provided us great service to the room. We chose a private open air Onsen and traditional setting, which they fixed our rooms each day. We could see the ocean on one side and mountain (for fire festival) on the other. Great location to everything and would definitely stay again. "
"The private onsen were phenomenal. The onsen in the room was also amazing. The main clerk made sure to explain everything he could about the room, the baths, and the entirety of the building. Breakfast was also amazing, a large spread of what I hope is a traditional Japanese breakfast. "
