Animal Ark

Nestled at the foot of the stunning Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, 40 kilometres north of Reno, the Animal Ark is a place where abandoned, lost and mistreated animals can find sanctuary. The only zoo of its kind in Nevada, Animal Ark also provides a safe haven for injured wildlife and animals who cannot be released back into the wild.

Conveniently divided into two sections, the Ark is home to an array of animal species including big cats, wild dogs, North American black bears, raptors and even a couple of charming desert tortoises. The place is a dream to navigate so grab a map and start exploring.

Make a beeline for the Cheetah Run to see the world’s fastest land animal reach speeds of up to 100 kilometres an hour. Marvel at the jaguars and white tigers as they relax in the shade, and keep an eye out for Aragon the gyrfalcon – one of the largest falcon breeds in the world. Meet Gracie the North American black bear who has lived in the Ark since she was a cub. Time your visit for around ten in the morning and you can watch her and her pal Eli being fed sweet strawberries.

Every enclosure uses native materials and has been carefully designed to closely emulate each animal’s respective natural habitat. Helpful information panels are located at every exhibit, giving visitors a comprehensive overview of the animals within, and friendly guides are also on hand if visitors have any further questions.

Although the Ark specialised in providing sanctuary for North American predators and native species, it has also given a home to a number of exotic pets who were kept illegally before being abandoned. As animal sanctuaries go, this one is a bit of a tear jerker… Knowing why the animals are here and discovering their individual stories are two very different things. Although some of the tales are tragic, it’s important to remember that the Ark has successfully rescued all the animals that now call it home and that your visit is contributing to their continued comfort.
