Marked with a lake in the shape of an “S,” the designer’s initial, there is no doubt that Alicante Golf Course is a source of pride for both Severiano Ballesteros and the people of Alicante. Opened in 1998 to cater to both the increasing numbers of Spanish golf players and the many beachgoers looking for somewhere to play golf between dips in the sea, it now serves as a championship course that is also beloved by amateurs. Bring clubs or rent some and try the ingeniously designed challenges of the greens.
Warm up before heading out for the game on the large practice space, including both a short play area and a driving range. Book a class with a professional conducted in Spanish or English. The par-72 course is a welcome challenge for beginners to experts and is designed so that each hole is a new experience for the golfers.
Take the time to appreciate the native plants that reflect the heritage of the region and make the course relatively ecologically friendly, supporting rubber plants and palms alongside almond and olive trees.
Bring a pair of binoculars to look for some of the area’s rarest birds that find refuge in the trees, including brown flamingos and the famous red-crested pochards.
On the 14th hole, play over the recreated ruins of a 1st-century Roman home that was found during the construction of the course.
Find Alicante Golf Course northeast of Alicante’s city center, a 20-minute drive or 25-minute tram ride from the main train station. Walk to Playa de San Juan in 15 minutes. Shuttle service is available connecting the on-site hotel and the golf course. Alicante Airport, a 20-minute drive away, offers connections throughout Spain.
The pro shop with equipment rental is open daily from early morning to early evening. The course itself is open from early morning to dusk daily year-round except Christmas and New Year’s Day. Book tee times and lessons online.
