Learn about World War II history or just take in the Weser Renaissance architecture of this three-sided hilltop castle with its captivating museums.

Wewelsburg Castle has changed roles many times over the years and its Kreismuseum tells part of its fascinating story. Learn about Germany’s turbulent past while taking in the grand architecture of this towering landmark above the village of Wewelsburg in Bueren.

The hilltop Wewelsburg Castle dates back to the 1600s, designed as the grand residence for the prince-bishops of Paderborn. As you approach, admire the triangular structure with towers on three corners. In 1631 the inquisitions of two witch trials were held in one of the basement rooms of the castle.

The original Kreismuseum (District Museum) in the castle opened in 1996. Today you can explore two different museums in the castle complex, covering the social and natural history of the area as well as the history of the castle itself.

First explore the Historical Museum of the Prince Bishopric of Paderborn in the castle’s south and east wings. Explore the museum’s dozens of rooms on three levels, plus more in the southeast tower. Admire the fascinating artifacts on display, including artworks and armor.

Then head to the former guardhouse in the forecourt for the Wewelsburg 1933-1945 Memorial Museum. Browse the free and fascinating exhibit Ideology and Terror of the SS. During the height of World War II, SS leader Heinrich Himmler turned the castle into the military headquarters of the Nazi regime. Learn about Himmler’s unusual rituals and the mythology he began to adopt for the SS and his role in the Holocaust.

Finish your visit with a meal or a drink in the on-site café with great views from its terrace. Two small museum shops offer a range of books and souvenirs, including medieval outfits for the kids.

Wewelsburg Castle in the Alme Valley is open daily except Mondays. Entry fees apply however, entry to the Ideology and Terror of the SS exhibit is free. Guided tours are available for an additional fee. On-site parking is free of charge. The castle is also easily reached by bus and bike from anywhere within Bueren. To extend your visit to the castle, spend a night at the youth hostel in its west wing.
