The Teatro Municipal (officially Teatro Municipal de Viña del Mar) is a historic theatre located in Viña del Mar’s city centre. Since its inauguration in 1930, the Teatro Municipal has been an important hub for the city’s cultural activities. Attend an event from its diverse schedule of artistic performances, ranging from the ballet to classical music shows.
Among the outstanding artists to have performed at the theatre was the late Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia. Today, artists from around the world continue to entertain up to 1,100 spectators at each performance. Watch shows by cuarteto guitarists, classical pianists and large orchestras. Attend ballets such as Zorba the Greek and interpretations by the Ballet de Santiago.
The theatre is also a host venue for major city festivals. Among these is September’s film festival, the Festival Internacional de Cine de Viña del Mar. Attend a concert or see a film in this historic monument.
Even if you don’t have time to see a show, visit the theatre to appreciate its striking architecture including the façade’s Greek-Roman style, which bears similarities to great European theatres. Notice the pilasters and the intricate designs that adorn the windows.
The Teatro Municipal stands on the eastern side of Plaza Vergara, the city’s central square. While here, be sure to stroll around the square and admire its green lawns, colourful flowerbeds and ornamental fountains. Look for a bust and monument of the city founder, José Francisco Vergara. Sit on a bench and watch children play on the lawns, friends meet to chat and workers relax on their lunch break.
It’s easy to reach the theatre via public transportation and shared taxis. The metro station called Viña del Mar is less than a 5-minute walk away. The theatre is also a short walk from major city attractions such as Quinta Vergara, a public park which contains the Palacio Vergara.
