Established in 1858, Södra Teatern is the oldest privately owned theatre house in Stockholm. Notice the venue’s distinctive façade, which features red-framed windows and enormous gold lettering.
Södra Teatern hosts theatre productions, festivals, political debates, cabaret and a range of other events, although it mainly focuses on music. Over the years, it has featured artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gogol Bordello and Coldplay. See the theatre’s main salon, which is decorated with red velvet chairs, gold detailing and balconies with delicate carvings. The venue has six smaller stages in addition to this main stage.
The venue also includes a restaurant and five bars, where performers and visitors can mingle before and after shows. Head to the theatre’s restaurant, Mosebacke Etablissement, for a meal or sip champagne at Champagnebaren, one of the highestsituated public terraces in Stockholm. Don’t miss the views from Sodra Bar, which stretches from City Hall to Skeppsholmen and the archipelago. During the summer, Mosebacke Terrace is one of the most popular gathering places in the neighbourhood.
Book ahead on Saturday or Sunday to enjoy the weekend Jazz Brunch offered at Mosebacke Etablissement. Sit on the restaurant’s terrace and enjoy lovely views across the harbour to Gamla Stan, Skeppsholmen and Djurgården. Eat delicious Nordic dishes while listening to live jazz music.
