A weekend in Skibby will give you the chance to discover – like many other students and history buffs – some of Denmark's best-preserved frescoes. At the same time, Skibby is a popular destination where you can just enjoy the beautiful open natural expanses of North Zealand.
Skibby's largest attraction is Skibby Church, dating back to 1100, where some previously painted-over frescoes have been uncovered. These fantastic paintings have now been restored for appreciation. In the church's brickwork, an old Latin manuscript was once found, known as the Skibby chronicle, which turned out to be a rich description of the political events of Denmark in the early 1500s.
Skibby is located on Hornsherred, a peninsula between Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord, where you can find charming little fishing villages. Here you can take a sailing trip or fishing excursion or just enjoy the wonderful beaches along the fjords. Also make sure that you pay Selsø Castle a visit, where you can take a tour and participate in exciting events. It is a good idea to keep an eye on the castle's events calendar when visiting Skibby.
Larger cities are not far away, such as Frederikssund, Holbæk and Roskilde, where you will find a wide array of shopping, dining and cultural opportunities. In Roskilde, you can visit the Viking Ship Museum, and in Frederikssund (only a 15-minute drive from Skibby), you will find the J.F. Willumsen Art Museum, home to several thousand of J.F. Willumsen's exciting works.
Hiring a car is the easiest way to get around during your holiday in Skibby. This way you can easily get to Copenhagen and Copenhagen Airport. There are also good public transport connections linking Skibby and Frederikssund and Skibby and Roskilde, from which you can take the train to Copenhagen's central station. There is also an S-train from Frederikssund to Copenhagen.
There are more than 20 golf courses near Skibby, so if you are a golf enthusiast and want to cultivate your passion during your stay in Skibby, opportunities abound.
