Salland, one of the three regions that make up the province of Overijssel, is situated between the other two regions Twente and Northwest Overijssel, putting it at the heart of the province! Take day trips into the countryside, take in the centuries-old cities and sights and visit the small, charming villages.
Salland has a varied history. In 1528, it was merged into one region together with Twente and Northwest Overijssel when Charles V bought the land from the bishop of Utrecht. The region is kind of t-shaped, with Deventer in the southern tip, Kampen in the western tip and Hardenberg in the east.
If you’re travelling with the kids, the famous theme park Avonturenpark Hellendoorn is a real must. Its location makes it easy to reach from Deventer, an old Hanseatic city full of wonderful sights, such as the oldest stone house in the Netherlands, De Proosdij. You can also shop and climb the 200 steps of the Gothic church Lebuïnuskerk for a fantastic view of the surroundings.
Nature lovers will love Salland. It’s very close to National Park De Sallandse Heuvelrug, a beautiful nature reserve full of heath and woods. Go on bicycle tours or walks and admire the countryside. Who knows, you might even see a fox, a badger or a weasel!
You cannot spend time in Salland without visiting the capital of the province Zwolle. Take some time for the Stedelijk Museum Zwolle and the 15th-century Sassenpoort, the impressive remains of the city's old defensive walls.
In addition to being a mediaeval Hanseatic city, Salland is mainly known for its nature. Book a hotel that is central to the region or close to nature so you can explore the woods or the heath, or both. Stop in one of the villages for coffee or a pint and take in the scenery. It's a great way to recharge your batteries!
You can reach the region by public transport or car from anywhere in the Netherlands.
Whether you're in Salland for a weekend or a longer holiday, this region is a great place to stay!
