Come to this hilltop plaza to discover some of the sublime views that inspired Belo Horizonte’s name, which means Beautiful Horizon.

Pope’s Square (Praça do Papa or Praça Governador Israel Pinheiro) is a raised square famous for its magnificent panoramas of Belo Horizonte’s cityscape and encompassing mountains. Admire the views, examine a sculpture by a Brazilian artist and attend performing arts events. Originally dedicated to the politician Israel Pinheiro, Pope’s Square took on its name following Pope John Paul II’s visit to the city and plaza in 1980.

The circular-shaped square has two levels, both of which feature paved, grass and tree-shaded areas. It is a favorite hangout among locals, who come to escape the downtown bustle and breathe in the fresh mountain air. Children can often be seen playing games on the lawns and street vendors offer drinks, snacks and fresh coconuts.

Climb the steps to the upper level for the best views and photo opportunities. Look north to see the city’s rooftops appear between two hillsides and then stretch toward the Espinhaço Mountains. The rugged hills of the Serra do Curral rise up behind the square’s south side. The hills also mark the eastern border of the city. Arrive late in the afternoon, wait for the sun to set and then marvel as thousands of lights illuminate the city.

Take time to study the Monumento à Paz (Peace Monument) by the Belém do Pará-born artist Ricardo Carvão. This 79-feet (24-meter) tall steel sculpture commemorates the visit of Pope John Paul II. It has three symbolic sections. The upper represents faith in God and the lower symbolizes God’s blessing. The middle refers to the heavenly peace and balance between faith and blessing.

Cultural events, such as concerts, food festivals and theatrical performances, take place at the square throughout the year. Among them is the Festival I Love Jazz, which welcomes national and international bands. Another is October’s Gastronomia na Praça, when craft beer bars, food trucks and wine stands take over the square.

Situated in the Mangabeiras neighborhood, Pope’s Square is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Belo Horizonte. Parking is possible around the square and public buses stop here. The Serra do Curral Municipal Park is a popular nearby attraction.
