Two observation towers loom high above the forest canopy and the historic river of this park. Rent paddle boats and sleep in modern cabins.

Lakes, rivers and waterfalls garnish the picturesque terrain of Platte River State Park, where a diverse range of lodging is available. Such activities as archery, fishing and hatchet-throwing are popular here. Choose between wood cabins, traditional tepees and camper huts for your stay amid the park’s glorious natural scenery.

Hike along trails hugging the banks of the Platte River, which is 310 miles (500 kilometers) long and eventually feeds the Missouri River. The river played a key role in the westward expansion of the pioneers, as part of the Oregon Trail and other routes.

Spot the wildlife that live along the river, including sandhill cranes, Canada geese and swans. Decorating the sky are bald eagles and herons. Relax on a bench facing Stone Creek Falls and listen to the soothing sound of falling water.

From the dense forest in the eastern side of the park rises the Lincoln Journal Tower. Climb 85 feet (26 meters) to its observation deck for a vista of the tops of the trees, the river and the green meadows beyond. Walk to Owen’s Crossing for horseback riding, target shooting and paddle boating.

Camp overnight with your family at one of the modern cabins, complete with air conditioning and heating. Ample amenities are provided, including showers, refrigerators and picnic tables. Arrive in the Pawnee Teepee Village to stay in these traditional conical tents reconfigured with wooden floors. Enjoy a meal in style at the Scott Lodge Restaurant, with stunning views of the river.

There is a small fee per vehicle to enter the state park, which is open year-round. Lodging prices vary depending on the season.

Platte River State Park lies on a bend of its namesake river in the southwest of Omaha. The 30-mile (50-kilometer) drive from central Omaha takes about 30 minutes. While in the vicinity, go to the Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari and Eugene T. Mahoney State Park.
