Pipa is a small fishing town with some of the most iconic beaches in Brazil, surrounded by forested hills and sand dunes. It is a tropical dreamland with clean air, a cool breeze that keeps mosquitos at bay and a range of exotic animals to see. Capture photos of the swaying palm trees that lean over the beach and provide shade.
The authorities of Pipa take care to preserve the habitats for the local animals. See dolphins and sea turtles in the water and venture into the forests to spot monkeys and exotic birds.
Swim in the clear water as a relief from the sun’s hot rays. Walk around the cliffs and bays of this sandy coastline. Dine on shrimp, lobster and other seafood at one of the thatched shacks that stand over the water.
Pipa Beach is the main sandy stretch with restaurants and bars, but it is surrounded by three other natural crescents of sand. Visit Golfinho Beach, which is the quietest part and the best place to see dolphins. Gaze up at the dramatic cliffs and forests of Madeiro Beach. Surfing conditions are ideal here and on Amor Beach, which is named for its heart-shaped bay.
Go sand boarding on the dunes and rent a buggy for a thrilling ride. Ride on a camel to add an exotic touch to your vacation.
Wander into the town for a glimpse of the lively local culture. Go to busy bars and restaurants at night and meet some of the friendly local residents and fellow vacationers. It is said that Portuguese settlers named Pipa, which means barrel, after a rock that seemed to look like a barrel of rum.
Lying on an outcrop that juts into the Atlantic Ocean, the commune of Pipa is 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Natal. It should take 1 to 2 hours to drive between the two towns. Farther south are the beach havens of Baía Formosa and Barra do Cunhaú.
