Explore the three glorious naves of the last Roman building in the region and pass through the only surviving town gate.

The Nikolai Church Eisenach is a majestic 12th-century structure at the core of the town’s religious history. It has been renovated many times over the years, resulting in a mix of architectural styles. Pass beneath the arch of the attached Romanesque Nikolai Gate, which is the only survivor of the initial five town gates.

Go for a guided spiritual tour with the docents of the adjacent Nikolai Center for a more comprehensive understanding of the church and its history. Enter this impressive basilica and browse the works of art lining the walls of its three naves. Admire the intriguing carvings and sculptures on the columns that adorn the church’s interior. The arches and windows feature a red underside, while a large crucifix hangs above the altar.

Outside, gaze up at the impressive clock tower, with its tall, black spire. The church formerly had a Gothic form, which was replaced by a Romanesque historicism design. Note that the structure was once the parish church and the gathering point for the abbey of the Benedictine nuns.

Take photos of the impressive church, surrounded by half-timbered buildings. See the structure at night, when it is illuminated in golden light. Stand in the 12th-century Nikolai Gate and think about how it was closed nightly to prevent people leaving or entering the town.

Bring some lunch for a picnic on the Karlsplatz square on a sunny afternoon. Examine the tall monument of a robed Martin Luther in the center of the small park.

The church opens to the public daily in summer from morning until late afternoon, with a break at noon. Book a tour by appointment in winter.

The Nikolai Church Eisenach is on the eastern side of the historic center of Eisenach. Arrive at the Eisenach Railway Station and walk west for 5 minutes to get here. Make sure to go to other highlights in the district, such as the Landestheater Eisenach, the Stadtpark and the Schmales Haus Eisenach.
