Explore the realms of science in Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Discovery and Science, spread out over 7,900 square meters. The two floors of the expansive museum feature everything science related, from hands-on exhibits to animal displays. Discover the secrets of space, the human body, and local flora and fauna through a multitude of intriguing activities and exhibits. While many of the exhibits are aimed at young children and teenagers, there's still plenty to keep adults entertained.
Begin your adventure right outside the main entrance at the Great Gravity Clock. Powered as the name suggests, by gravity, this huge 16-metre clock is one of only three large kinetic energy clocks in the world. As each minute, 10 minutes and hour passes, balls roll down the slanted rails, changing the hands of the clock.
Next, visit the animal enclosures on the first floor where you can see views of the North American river otters wading about from the underwater and above ground viewing platforms. Marvel at aquariums brimming with Florida marine species like the majestic nurse sharks and playful grouper fish. You will also meet alligators, turtles, bats, snakes, and tarantulas.
Head to the second floor to the science exhibits and propel yourself into air and space travel in the Runways to Rockets exhibit. Find out how much you would weigh on different planets and pilot a jet aircraft (one of nine simulators). Learn about the intricate details of your body in Choose Health and the science of sound in the Sounds display. Try your hand at puzzles and magnet experiments, experience hurricane-force winds, or delve into dinosaurs in interactive exhibits across the floor.
Housing only indoor exhibits, a trip to the museum is a great way to spend rainy days and sweltering summer afternoons. Catch one of the 2-D and 3-D films shown daily at the 300-seat IMAX Theatre, which includes Hollywood blockbusters and documentaries. While not included in the price of the entrance fee, you may get it included as part of a special combo deal. Check online or ask someone at the counter.
Located in the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment district in downtown Fort Lauderdale, The Museum of Discovery and Science is accessible by bus or car, and free parking is available. The museum and IMAX Theatre are open 365 days a year.
