Discover the stories and faces behind Liverpoolā€™s fascinating maritime history at this dedicated museum, right in the heart of the Albert Dock cultural precinct.

During the early 20th century, Liverpool was considered Britainā€™s "gateway to the world." It was home to one of the biggest ports in Europe, and the busiest in the United Kingdom. Liverpool was a major trade centre, the departure point for some of the worldā€™s most luxurious ocean liners and played a crucial role during World War II. History enthusiasts and boat lovers will enjoy a day out at the museum, while families will love the educational games targeted at children.

Explore the interactive exhibits that make the Merseyside Maritime Museum one of the most popular attractions in the city. Dedicated exhibition spaces tell the story of the Titanic and the story that unfolded following the ship's departure from the United Kingdom. See rare video footage and photographs of passengers on the docks. Ā

Learn about the role that the British Navy played during World War II, and why Liverpool was chosen as the major naval facility during that time. In the basement of the building the fascinating Seized! The Border and Customs Uncovered gallery displays the amazing collection of items seized from smugglers at the Liverpool port. Children will love the Cargo-a-go-go game, an educational freight handling game where boxes are balanced on a ship. Follow the childrenā€™s trails that traverse the museum to reach a number of other child-friendly activities, including the Sea Urchins play area.

The Merseyside Maritime Museum is located within the heart of the Albert Dock cultural precinct, and is easily reached on foot from many downtown hotels. A bus route services the area, and paid parking is available in the multilevel parking lot. The museum is open daily and admission is free.

The Customs and Border Exhibition is the best of them all. The slavery section was a very interesting look at the places many of the slaves were taken from, but it did not explore the cultural and societal reasons behind slavery, or have any of the detail of living conditions, work or the road to emancipation as the ā€˜mission statementā€™ promises.
