Memorial Park is located on the western outskirts of Houston and is visited by millions of people every year, who come to use the sporting facilities and run or bike on the extensive, well-maintained trails. As one of the USA’s largest city parks, Memorial Park covers an impressive 593 hectares and contains tennis courts, croquet lawns, volleyball courts, a swimming pool and even an 18-hole golf course. The Seymour Lieberman Exercise Trail stretches for five kilometres and is popular with joggers and walkers, especially in the mornings and at weekends. Lit up at night for safety, the trail is well equipped with water fountains, exercise stations and bathrooms.
Skaters and cyclists will enjoy the bump-free surface of the Memorial Park Picnic Loop, which is filled with picnic facilities, making it popular with families and groups who come to enjoy the warm weather and relaxed surroundings at weekends.
For a bumpier ride, mountain bike enthusiasts should head to the southwest side of the park, where the densely wooded trails are perfect for bikers. The Buffalo Bayou waterway area is particularly challenging terrain, even for experienced riders. If hiking is more your thing then head out on one of the many walking trails, keeping an eye out for the local wildlife on the way. Not all of the trails are signposted, so bring along a map and compass if you can, and try to avoid heading off alone.
Memorial Park has an interesting history. Originally used during World War I as an army training camp, the land was sold back to the city in 1924 and consequently dedicated to the servicemen who died in the war.
Located just 10 minutes from downtown Houston by car, Memorial Park is open daily and has free parking on-site. Some of the facilities, including the swimming pool and golf course, charge an entrance fee.
