Stroll past scenic vineyards to see this medieval castle, which lies in the shadows of forested mountains.

Maretsch Castle is an impressive structure with a gray façade, four Renaissance-era round towers and tiled turrets. For centuries, it served as a residence for aristocratic families and now functions as a venue for events and concerts. Admire views of the surrounding vineyards and take photos of the spectacular castle with a backdrop of the looming peaks of the Dolomites.

Among the oldest parts of the castle is the central stronghold, which dates back to the 12th century. The castle was renovated and enlarged several times by various owners in the 13th and 14th centuries. Note the four round towers these were added by the Römer family in the late 15th century, giving the structure its current Renaissance appearance.

Arrange to have a guided tour to explore the interior. Learn about the history of the buildings and hear stories about its former residents. The castle takes its name from its commissioner, Berthold von Maretsch, who had it constructed in 1194. Inspect the Renaissance-era fresco, which depicts important philosophers from bygone times. Look for the dried-up moat, which contained water up until at least the 1600s.

Attend one of the events, such as concerts and fairs, often held in the castle or arrange a special party of your own here. The complex now mostly serves as a convention center and wedding venue and it no longer houses permanent occupants. Amble along the vineyard and appreciate the serenity of this quiet rural environment. The Lungotalverapromenade offers views of the castle and is an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll.

The castle, known as Schloss Maretsch in German and Castel Mareccio in Italian, was restored in the 1980s. Reserve a guided tour in advance online or by phone, which is the only way to access the castle unless you’re a guest at an event here.

Find Maretsch Castle is by the Talvera River in the northwestern part of Bolzano. The castle is just to the east of the Parco Petrarca and to the north of the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. Arrive at the Bolzano Railway Station and walk northwest for 15 minutes to reach the castle.
