This grand neo-Gothic monument, characterized by its bell tower and multiple spires, lords over the lively main square of Mar del Plata.

Get in touch with your spiritual side at Mar del Plata Cathedral (Iglesia Catedral de Mar del Plata). Admire its artistic attributes such as carved reliefs, ornate woodwork, sculptures of revered saints and stained-glass windows. The foundation stone of Mar del Plata Cathedral was laid in 1893. It is dedicated to both St. Peter and St. Cecilia.

The cathedral’s exterior is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. The large structure dominates San Martin Square. It features a tall belfry with a rose window in the center and turrets on either side. Decorating the main façade are handcrafted reliefs portraying scenes from the life of Jesus. Note the recurring appearance of Gothic-style spires. Balustrades, flying buttresses and pinnacles add artistic beauty to the side façades.

Climb the steps to the main entrance, step inside and discover a veritable feast of artwork. See images of the 12 disciples of Jesus standing atop pedestals. Look up at the tall vaulting over the aisles of the nave and browse portrayals of the Stations of the Cross. Observe as the sun’s rays enter through the colorful stained-glass windows and bathe the church in natural light.

Examine the collection of opulent altars. The High Altar has images of esteemed saints in addition to a pair of high reliefs. Take time to appreciate the figurines, mosaics and woodcarvings adorning the side altars. Descend a staircase to the crypt, where you’ll find the tomb of Bishop Enrique Rau, the city’s first bishop. Also look for the marble baptismal font and the Gothic ornamentation of the sacristy.

Centrally located on San Martín Square, the cathedral is a short walk from other major city attractions. Among these are the Colón Theater and Mitre Square. Bristol Beach is a 10-minute walk to the east. Shop for artisanal handicrafts at the stores located on Diagonal de Los Artesanos.

Mar del Plata Cathedral is open daily and admission is free. Mass services in Spanish take place daily. Check the cathedral’s official website for information about occasional chamber music and choral recitals.
