Treat yourself to a day of racing car and bike action at Lucas Oil Raceway. This major sporting venue hosts a year-round program of auto, bike and drag races on its oval circuit and drag strip.
Take your seat in the grandstands to watch monster trucks, sprint cars, dragsters and super stock vehicles in action. You may even see top fuel cars compete against each other. These are among the fastest-accelerating cars in the world and can cover 1,000 feet (300 meters) in less than 3.8 seconds.
Time your visit to coincide with the Annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, one of the oldest and most popular drag races in the world. It is held every Labor Day weekend, which is either the last weekend in August or the first weekend in September. Onsite RV, camper and tent spaces are available for this event if you want to stay overnight. There are also camping facilities across the street from the sporting complex.
Bring an autograph book with you to collect the signatures of your favorite drivers. Signing sessions are held before many races.
If your hobby is collecting diecast model cars or want to purchase a special gift, visit Gearheads at the raceway's main entrance. The shelves of this shop are filled with boxes of the collectibles.
Lucas Oil Raceway is located 15 miles (24 kilometers) from downtown Indianapolis and 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Indianapolis International Airport. Public transportation services don't connect with the complex so take a taxi or drive and use the paid parking facilities. The prices of these races vary from event to event. For the full schedule of races and ticket prices, visit Lucas Oil Raceway's official website.
After watching exhilarating and loud races, stop by other attractions located within a few minutes’ drive of the racing track. These include Montrose Farms Alpaca Ranch, Hoosier Athletic Center and the bowling lanes of the Sunshine Bowling Center.
