Lafayette Square is an important historic site for Savannah, popular for its proximity to many of Savannah’s architecturally significant buildings. Overlooking the square you’ll find the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, an exquisite French Gothic-style church on the north side of the square. Lafayette Square also features the childhood home of the famous American writer and essayist Flannery O’Conner.
Visit a 19th-century mansion that was once the home of notable Savannah resident Samuel Pugh Hamilton and a photogenic Italian villa-style mansion with beautiful gardens. Lafayette Square is just a short walk from Forsyth Park, a large city park with peaceful walking trails, sporting areas and monuments.
Watch the cascading waters of the fountain at the heart of Lafayette Square. The National Society of Colonial Dames of America dedicated this memorial to the city in the late 20th century. It commemorates the founding of the Georgia colony in the 18th century. Notice the Hamilton-Turner house on the east side of Lafayette Square. This beautiful mansion was built in the late 19th century and has now been transformed into luxury accommodation. Stay in one of the 17 lavish rooms, filled with antiques and unique decorative artwork.
Stand at the northeast corner of the square to view the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. This church is renowned for its stunning French Gothic architecture and two magnificent spires. The cathedral was completed in the late 19th century and is still operational. Notice the renaissance-style murals and main altar as you walk inside this amazing building.
See the historic Andrew Low House, a pretty Italian villa-style mansion with Grecian details. Study the ironwork balconies and charming front garden. This house was designed and built in the mid-19th century. Take a guided tour of the Andrew Low House and explore many of the elegantly decorated rooms.
Find Lafayette Square in historic downtown Savannah. This square is located less than a mile (approximately 1 kilometer) from Forsyth Park. Find accommodation near the square, including luxury historic inns, riverfront hotels and self-catered apartments. Metered parking is available in the area.
