Gerani is a quaint seaside village surrounded by orange, olive, cypress and pine trees. This charming coastal town is known for its long shoreline and the archaeologically impressive Gerani Cave, located on the outskirts of town. Lounge on the secluded and spacious beach, hike the surrounding hills and enjoy the sleepy ambiance of this traditional town.
The town has a laid-back and low-key atmosphere, making it a great place to unwind. Relax under the sun on the Blue Flag-awarded Gerani Beach. Play on the golden sands, swim or lie on a beach lounger and look out to the uninhabited island of Agii Theodori in the distance. The eastern part of the beach is more difficult to access and is often used for nude bathing.
The extraordinary Gerani Cave is, quite literally, a hidden gem. Explore the six halls where stalagmites, human skeletons and stone tools from the Neolithic period can be found. Look for deer bones from the Pleistocene period, as well as the skeletons of people who were trapped in the cave during an earthquake. When the cave was discovered in the late 1960s, it was revealed that rocks had been blocking the entrance since the late Neolithic period and as such, other archaeologically significant periods like the Minoan are not represented. More relics can be seen at the nearby Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon.
The town is within easy reach of several picturesque villages. Experience traditional hospitality in the nearby town of Rethymnon, home to the 16th-century Monastery of Arkadi. Other popular towns include Pano Gerani, Modi, Loutraki and Manoliopoulo, all of which are within 6 miles (10 kilometers) of Gerani. See the sights in each and stop in an authentically rustic tavern for a cool drink and a bite to eat.
Gerani is in the Rethymnon region of Crete and can be accessed by bus from Rethymnon and Chania. Driving is one of the easiest ways to get around Crete and one of the best ways to see the scenery, so consider renting a car during your stay. During the peak season, it is recommended you reserve a car well in advance.
