Wander along a historic tree-lined promenade in these gardens, marvel at the 18th-century palace and browse exhibits on cartoons and graphic arts.

The Georgengarten is a marvelous landscape garden with charming tree-lined paths, a majestic palatial building and other elegant structures. It is part of the larger Herrenhäuser Gärten, where you will find a mausoleum, a castle and many other intriguing features. Take a romantic stroll with a loved one along the wide boulevards of this leafy park.

Gaze up at the historic Georgenpalais mansion and enter to appreciate its 18th-century décor and furniture. It was built by an art collector and lieutenant general and later sold to King George III of Hannover, who renamed the palace and gardens after himself.

Today, the palace contains the Wilhelm Busch Museum, which is dedicated to its namesake painter and poet. Examine his acclaimed works of art in the central part of the museum. Visit the site’s west wing for displays on cartoons and graphic arts. Enjoy a picnic on the wide, open lawn in front of the palace.

Enter the garden and amble along the vast Herrenhäuser Allee, which has large lime trees on its flanks. The scenic path runs for about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers). See the memorial stone dedicated to Johann Gerhard Helmcke, who protected the boulevard from attack by French troops.

Among the highlights of the park is the Leibniz Temple, an 18th-century circular structure with 12 ionic columns. Admire how it is reflected in the placid water of the adjacent pond. Take a break at the Steintormasch Restaurant and Café.

Note that the park was severely damaged during World War II during bombing by a Royal Air Force air raid. It took until the late 1990s to fully restore the garden and park areas.

The museum opens from late morning until late afternoon from Tuesday to Sunday. There is a fee to access all of the grounds within the Herrenhäuser Gärten.

Find the Georgengarten about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) northwest of Hannover’s city center. Ride the U-Bahn to get here in about 15 minutes. The site also has a parking lot where you can leave your car for a fee. Visit nearby attractions, such as the Berggarten, the Leibniz University of Hannover and the Leine River.
