Begin your exploration at the Frank Lloyd Wright Homeand Studio. Walk through the site where the world-renowned architect designedsome of his most famous structures. Daily public tours offer insight into theprivate and professional life of Wright and highlight the unique details of hishome.
After your tour, stop by the gift shop to grab a guidebook and then head out to explore the rest of the neighborhood at your ownpace. Make sure to keep your camera close at hand to take photos of the iconichouses and buildings. About 80 homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright aredistributed throughout the district. Keep an eye out for the famousNathan G. Moore and Arthur Heurtley houses, which are two of Wright's mostbeloved designs.
In addition to Wright’s iconic prairie school style, you can also admire examples of Gothic and Tudor Revival, 1920s Medieval, art deco and craftsmen designs. The district is widely regarded as the country’s best collection of architecture from the past century and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. There are over 1,300 homes thatshowcase notable architecture packed into this district, which covers around 80 city blocks.
Take a break in one of Oak Park’s restaurants and cafés. The downtown area is also filledwith boutiques and galleries where you can grab a memento from your visit.After exploring the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District, take the bus orcommuter rail to downtown Chicago to see more of the architect’s iconic buildings. Both theFrederick C. Robie House and the Rookery are easily accessible from Oak Park using public transport.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District is located inOak Park, a village 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of downtown Chicago. Guided tours cost a small fee andlast about 1.5 hours. Tours are not available on major holidays.
