Experience a hands-on history lesson when you explore the heritage waterfront and climb to the top of this 19th-century fort to look out over New London Harbor.

Fort Trumbull State Park contains a grand Egyptian-Revival fortification that actively guarded the Thames River and the entrance to the city’s harbor. Wander around the spacious waterfront grounds and watch boats sailing by or head to the park’s visitor center to learn about the fort’s fascinating history. Make your way to the top of the fort’s ramparts and explore the building’s restored 19th-century living quarters.

The fort dates back to 1839, when it was constructed as one of 42 coast-guard forts. Fort Trumbull is unique in its architectural design, which incorporates elegant Egyptian-style motifs. Go to the visitor center to learn about 225 years of military history through its multimedia theaters and interactive exhibits.

Make your way over to the fort and walk around the steadfast structure to take in views of its intriguing stonework and masonry. Join a tour and see the fort’s interior, which contains beautifully restored displays that demonstrate daily life during the fort’s time in action. Explore the living quarters, which has been restored to how it would have appeared in the late 1800s. See a 1950s-style office, which shows an insight into how the fort’s research and development laboratories would have looked after World War II.

Climb to the fort’s ramparts to experience one of New London’s best waterfront views. You’ll see sweeping views of the Thames River, the harbor and downtown, as well as Fort Griswold across the water in Groton.

The park’s waterfront features a pretty boardwalk, which extends from the rocky shoreline and is a popular fishing spot. Cast a line from the pier and try your luck hooking some of the game fish of Long Island Sound.

Fort Trumbull State Park is a 5-minute drive from downtown New London. It has on-site parking and public restrooms. You can also reach the park via the Thames River Heritage Park Water Taxi on Fridays and weekends during summer and early fall. The park grounds, boardwalk and parking lot are free to access however, there is a fee for entrance to the visitor center and tours of the fort. The fort is closed between Labor Day and Memorial Day.
