Covering a total of 5,600 square metres, Deichtorhallen effortlessly blends high-profile shows from around the world with local talent and the best of current photography. It consists of a pair of renovated food and flower market halls which have been transformed into top-class modern photography and art facilities, regularly hosting exciting international shows.
The structures themselves were originally built in 1911, and their interiors have been stylishly refurbished in steel and glass. This provides an excellent setting for the wonderful shows mounted here.
The North Hall is the home of contemporary art, and has played host to some of the biggest names of the 20th century in the shape of innovators such as Andy Warhol, Martin Kippenberger and Louise Bourgeois. Since it opened its doors at the end of the 1980s, over 160 significant shows have been hosted here.
Moving on to the South Hall, you’ll find the magic of the camera exhibited in full. The House of Photography plays host to the largest open archive of journalistic photography in Germany, including a huge assortment of images from the important Der Spiegel magazine. It is also home to a huge collection of renowned fashion photographer F.C. Gundlach’s work. As well as all of the above, there are regularly changing displays which can range from historical images from the early days of photography to work since the advent of the digital era.
Browse the Design and Book Shop, or pick something up from amongst the items for sale in the House of Photography, including beautiful limited-edition prints.
Deichtorhallen is open throughout the week, except on Mondays. You can buy a ticket for one exhibition space, or a discounted combination ticket. Parking is available on site, or you can take the train to the nearby Steinstrasse U-bahn station.
