Cheap flights to Lisbon
Lisbon’s faded grandeur is, quite literally, a thing of the past. Today the Portuguese capital is the vibrant location for innovative start-ups, trendy bars, foodie culture and hip hotels.
Spend sunny days by the river, feast on pastel de nata, take the yellow streetcar to ancient Belem and then dance the night away in its clubs and bars.
But, first of all, why not find out how to bag a bargain flight to Lisbon?
When to book cheap flights to Lisbon
Lisbon has warm summers with temperatures often hitting around 30 degrees, and wet, windy winters with temperatures around 10 degrees. Even in the coldest months of December and January the city rarely sees freezing temperatures, although the rain can make it feel colder. The hottest months are July and August, and the coolest are December through February.
Best time to fly to Lisbon
Lisbon is one of Europe's sunniest capitals. There’s 300 days of sunshine to enjoy here, so you may want to consider avoiding the hot and sticky summer months when flight prices are at their highest. If you opt for a spring or autumn flight the weather is better for tackling those infamous hills, the crowds are less and cheap flights are easier to find.
While the winter is far from cold, with temperatures rarely falling below 100C, it can be very wet – and Christmas is something of a damp squib here too.
Unless carnivals are your reason for visiting avoid Easter and June’s Festas de Lisboa. Lisbon is fun-packed but so are the available flight seats.
Whatever your reason for visiting, or the season you visit, there are some secrets to finding cheap flights.
Here are three ways to find those deals.
- Check other departure points. Our ‘Nearby Airports’ option can be found your chosen departure location. Using this allows you to explore the deals available from other airports close to you.
- Take advantage of cheap flights on certain days. If you have no restrictions on when you fly you can find the cheapest fares by using our ‘Show Flexible Dates’ feature. This appears just above where your flight options are returned – and it lets you see exactly when the cheapest tickets are.
Here are some of the most popular routes:
Getting to Lisbon from Portela Airport
Lisbon Portela Airport is just under five miles from the city centre. There's a taxi rank just outside the arrivals hall, and cabs are relatively cheap over the short distance to the city. The airport also has its own stop on the Metro line and there are regular bus services to whisk you into the capital. If you are looking to explore beyond the city there are many car hire options within the airport too.
Things to see and do in Lisbon
There are seven hillsides that overlook the Rio Tejo and warmly embrace Lisbon's cobbled streets, ancient ruins and white cathedrals.
Here are some things to look out for as you explore.
Lisbon’s Museu do Marioneta is housed in a church that is stuffed to the rafters with puppets of every description. It should most certainly pull your strings!
In the Bohemian neighbourhood of the Bairro Alto there is a great choice of cafes, bars and restaurants to soak up the atmosphere. The winds off Lisbon Bay help keep things cool here even in the hottest of summers.
Lisbon is one city break that also offers sand and surf. The beach is just a few minutes away by train or bus from the centre. Cascais is the most popular seaside resort for locals – and who are we to argue?
