"Hotel Vila Gale in the Lapa district of Rio is a great hotel with friendly and helpful staff. The breakfast was excellent and there is a large swimming pool and sunbathing area. Lapa is close to the Sambadrome during Carnival season, but the area is rundown and there are many rough sleepers on the streets. However, we did not experience any issues and loved all the faded splendour of the old buildings. "
