Popular with both surfers and families alike, this beautiful sandy beach is just a few minutes’ walk from the center of Bude.

Relax on central Bude Beach, known as Summerleaze Beach, and soak up the sun. Climb the cliffs, ride the waves and take a long stroll along the sands. Book lessons with an instructor and learn to surf or kayak. Relax in the sea pool or with a drink at the café.

Summerleaze is sheltered by an impressive breakwater which makes it a great place for safe swimming. The beach is flanked by the River Neet, which is often used by little fishing boats. Massive lock gates lead into the mouth of Bude Canal. Rest by the river and watch the boats or grab a fishing rod yourself and hope for mackerel or bass.

Try the Bude Sea Pool, a pleasant alternative to the open ocean. Opened in 1930, the pool is a partially man-made and partially natural rock pool. Find the pool at the foot of the cliffs at the back of the beach. Whatever the conditions of the sea itself, you’ll be able to relax in this salt water pool, which is naturally filled and cleaned by the tide.

Rent a beach hut for a lazy day in the sun. For a more active day out, there are numerous activities. Hit the waves if you have the experience or book an instructor. Local schools offer lessons in surfing, kayaking, rock climbing and more. There are even guides available to help you learn more about beach ecology and geology.

Walk to the beach in just 5 minutes from the center of Bude. If you’re traveling from farther afield use the parking lot, which has a fee. Summerleaze Beach and the pool are protected by Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards between the beginning of May and the end of September and over the Easter weekend. The RNLI also operate a shop on the beach. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed between mid-May and the end of September until the evening. The beach has excellent facilities, including toilets, shops and a café.
