Visit this magnificent neo-Gothic landmark to admire its fine architecture and Ecuador-themed gargoyles, and the panoramic views from its immense towers.

The Basílica del Sagrado Voto Nacional (Basilica of the National Vow) is a grand building that has been compared to the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The Roman Catholic Basílica del Sagrado Voto Nacional is a neo-Gothic masterpiece and the largest of its kind in the Americas. Visit the basilica to discover its stunning architecture and beautiful sanctuary and chapels.

The basilica was constructed at the turn of the 20th century and was completed in 1909, relying heavily on donations from worshippers. Townspeople donated stones to the church’s construction and in exchange their names were engraved into the rock.

Situated on a steep hill to the northeast of the historic center, the basilica is a prominent feature in the skyline from almost any viewpoint in the city. Admire the church’s intricate neo-Gothic details as you draw nearer. Spot the carved grotesques of native Ecuadorian animals such as armadillos, iguanas, dolphins and Galapagos tortoises that adorn the church’s arches.

Enter the church’s vast 98-foot (30-meter) high sanctuary and take in the peaceful atmosphere. See bronze images depicting apostles and evangelists through the warm hues of the stained-glass windows that illuminate the lavish red and gold interior.

After wandering through the sanctuary and admiring the chapels, head to the two ornate frontal towers. Climb the 377-foot (115-meter) towers via the stone staircase and pause at the internal balcony to look down on the nave and the stone arches. Continue up the stairs to the lookout facing south. Use the telescope to spot landmarks such as the Virgin monument on El Panecillo. If you are not afraid of heights, climb up an iron run to reach the tower’s top for unparalleled views of the city and the surrounding mountain ranges.

Visit the Basílica del Sagrado Voto Nacional in the Santa Prisca neighborhood of Quito’s historic Old Town. The area is easily accessible by public transportation. The basilica is open daily. Buy a ticket for a tour of the building on arrival. Walk by the basilica at night to see this distinctive landmark magnificently lit with blue and green lights.
