Atarfe is a municipality in the province of Granada, at the foot of the Sierra Elvira mountains. Its name is believed to come from the Arabic artarf, which means limit, because Atarfe was on the border with Medina Elvira, the most important city in the Vega de Granada region between the 7th and 10th centuries. Atarfe stands out in many aspects, such as its religious architecture. Undoubtedly, the symbol of the municipality is the Ermita de los Tres Juanes, built in 1941 in honour of John the Evangelist, John the Baptist and John of God. Ironically, it was never used for religious purposes. Nowadays, it houses a small museum of natural sciences and is perfect for enjoying the views of the surrounding area, since it is located on the top of Castillejo Hill.
The Church of the Incarnation, however, is still active and was built on the remains of an Arab mosque. If you are still hungry for more, visit the Santa Ana Hermitage. It is located on a small hill to the north-west of the old city centre and was built on the convent of the order of St. Paul of the Cross.
In a municipality of just 18,000 inhabitants you are not likely to expect to find an installation like the impressive Medina Elvira Cultural Centre.
