In this iconic church, marvel at the impressive stained-glass windows and other artistic delights that date back many centuries.

Angers Cathedral is a striking piece of Romanesque and Gothic architecture that is among the most recognizable sites in the city. Although its foundations date back to the 11th century, it has been renovated many times over the centuries. Peruse the significant works of art in every corner of the church, including frescoes and sets of carvings.

The nave’s stained-glass windows from the 12th through the 16th centuries are the church’s most exquisite features. Appreciate the intricate details of stories of the Virgin Mary, the Virgin’s Dormition and the martyrdoms of St. Vincent and St. Catherine of Alexandria.

See the impressive rose windows that were crafted in the 15th century by master glassmaker André Robin. Other windows were recreated in the 20th century after damage during World War II. These include the story of St. Maurice, the cathedral’s patron saint.

Walk through the center of the cathedral and consider its long history. Note how the nave is particularly wide and has no side aisles. Admire the 12th-century sculptures illuminated by the colored light that penetrates through the stained-glass windows.

Capture photos of the church’s façade from the plaza outside. It is unusually tall and narrow, generating an imposing sight. Admire the four different levels, each with its own architectural style.

Inside the church, view the Grand Organ. An organ has stood in this spot since the 14th century. The enormous instrument in place today has been renovated several times starting in the 1600s. Browse the church’s charming array of tapestries that decorate its walls.

The church’s full name in English is the Saint Maurice Cathedral of Angers. Visit any time from morning until early evening, with later opening times in the summer.

Angers Cathedral lies just south of La Maine River in the heart of the city’s downtown area. Take a bus to one of the many nearby stops or a train to the Gare SNCF d’Angers Saint-Laud south of the cathedral. Nearby attractions include the Museum of Fine Arts and the Place du Ralliement.
