Watch a dance show or opera with local residents and admire the ornate architecture of the city’s oldest theater.

The Alberto Maranhão Theater is a historic institution in central Natal with a pastel façade with white features. It has balconies and a majestic courtyard decorated with palm trees and a statue. Watch a dramatic or musical performance in this prestigious theater, which is listed as a national monument by the Historical and Artistic Heritage of Rio Grande do Norte.

Appreciate the relief from the heat in the air-conditioned main hall, allowing spectators to enjoy the performances in comfort. The theater has an eclectic program featuring stage plays, concerts, operas and dance shows.

Admire the ornate fixtures and balconies of the façade. See the theater at night, when bright golden lights illuminate the front. The structure has a colonial Portuguese design with Belgian art and influences from French designs.

Peruse the small shop, where you can buy CDs and books. Stroll through the courtyard and inspect the photos of the theater from 100 years ago to see how it has changed with time.

Learn about the history of the building, which was built between 1898 and 1904 under the orders of Mayor Theodósio Paiva. Initially, it was known as the Carlos Gomes Theater in reference to the Brazilian composer who became popular as a classical composer in Italy. In the 1950s Mayor Djalma Maranhão renamed the theater after an earlier governor. The theater has been restored and renovated several times, particularly in 2004 to mark its centennial year.

Purchase tickets for a show from the box office in the theater. Check the schedule here for intriguing performances during your stay. Enter the theater for free and look around.

The Alberto Maranhão Theater is in the Ribeira part of the center of the city. Arrive by train at the Natal Ribeira Station that stands beside the theater. Ride a bus to one of the stops on the roads that enclose the structure. See nearby attractions, such as the Djalma Maranhão Museum of Popular Culture, the Salesiano São José College and several important government buildings.
