Located in beautiful Yosemite National Park, Ahwahnee Meadow in the Yosemite Valley is a tranquil and picturesque area to spend time appreciating majestic surroundings. Look for Half Dome and Yosemite Falls, which are easily identifiable from the meadow. Drive or hike to the accessible observation deck or catch the bus making regular rounds. Half Dome is a natural rock structure with a sheer granite face. Climbers and hikers take on the 4,800 feet (1,500 meters) of elevation change from the Yosemite Valley floor to the top of Half Dome. Consider its huge size, larger than the Rock of Gibraltar. The smooth face provides a stunning sight when it catches the setting sun.
Another incredible feature near Ahwahnee Meadow is one of many waterfalls throughout the park. Yosemite Falls is the highest waterfall on the continent and one of the largest in the world. Hike easily on a trail from the meadow that leads to the base of this 2,425-foot (739-meter) set of waterfalls. View water plummeting from the lower falls. Water volumes can differ dramatically, with less flow during the winter freeze and dry periods in summer.
Hike from here to Glacier Point or drive to its summit at 7,214 feet (2,199 meters) above sea level. Gaze down upon Yosemite Valley and Curry Village a dizzying 3,214 feet (980 meters) below.
The meadow’s location beside Yosemite Village is convenient for purchasing provisions, including permits and camping gear. Visit the Yosemite Museum featuring Native American culture and the Ansel Adams Gallery of photographic art. For those who want to stay in a building with all amenities, rather than in a tent or cottage, the historic Ahwahnee, formerly the Majestic Yosemite Hotel, is close to the meadow.
A park admission fee is charged. Find Ahwahnee Meadow on the eastern edge of Yosemite Village, with access from Northside Drive or Ahwahnee Drive. Plan at least a one-night stay in this nature-filled park surrounded by rock giants.
