“Yosegi Zaiku” is a traditional Japanese marquetry technique originating from Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. This craft involves creating intricate geometric patterns by combining pieces of wood of different natural colours and grains

I and my son participated in yosegi coaster-making activity .
This activity can be enjoyed by the whole family.
Before making the yosegi coaster, I was worried if my son(he is 6 years old) could actually do it. But once he started, he became very focused and enjoyed making it a lot.
He took the coaster at home and he use it as a coaster to place his cup on. He also show it off to my dad at home.
If there are parents who are worried, don’t be. I’m sure your child will enjoy making it. People of all ages, from adults to children, can enjoy it. It will become a wonderful memory.

Activity itinerary

1. Where to Meet: we meet at Iryuda Station (next to Hakoneyumoto station) and walk 15 minutes to the destination. 2. Activity 1: Making yosegi coasters: When you arrive, you start making coasters. You can learn how to make coaster from teacher. (I translate from Japanese to English) You use 12 pieces diamond shapes made of wood, rubber band, sandpaper, glue and wax to create a unique coaster. It takes about 1 hour to complete the coaster. You can take the coaster home to enjoy it yourself or give it as a gift. 3. Activity 2: Visiting Yosegi art Museum: After making the coaster, you visit Yosegi art museum to admire its beautiful works. If you’re lucky, you may see karakuri dolls (mechanical puppets) on weekends. 4. Shopping at the shop: After viewing the artworks, you visit the attached shop. The shop sells traditional crafts such as chopsticks, ornaments, and wooden box items.
