What you can expect
Right in the heart of The Hague, the Hague Tower stands proudly beside the Grote Kerk, a testament to the city’s rich history. This iconic structure, once a church tower, has played many crucial roles throughout its history. Beyond its ecclesiastical origins, it served as a lookout, lighthouse, watchtower, and city clock. Today, it remains a beloved symbol of homecoming for many residents of The Hague.
Since 2017, the Hague Tower has opened its doors to visitors, thanks to the efforts of volunteers from the Ga Den Haag foundation. These dedicated guides offer tours that reveal the tower's fascinating history. As you explore this tangible piece of The Hague’s heritage, you’ll hear stories of its past, witness centuries-old mechanisms still in operation, and marvel at the breathtaking views from the upper walkway.
With over 600 years of history, the Hague Tower is not just a city landmark; it’s a survivor of revolutions, restorations, wars, the French Occupation, and lightning strikes. Notable figures like Christiaan Huygens, Vincent van Gogh, and Napoleon have all ascended this unique tower, adding to its storied legacy.
Climbing the Hague Tower is an experience accessible to almost everyone who is able to walk stairs. The ascent includes several floors where visitors can pause and catch their breath before continuing, while listening to the stories of the guide. Once you reach the top, the panoramic views are nothing short of spectacular, offering sights of The Hague’s beautiful skyline, Rotterdam, and even the sea.
For English-speaking visitors, a handout with the tour’s translation is provided upon request at the ticket centre, though most tours are English spoken.
Whether you’re a history buff, a lover of architecture, or simply in search of stunning views, the Hague Tower promises an unforgettable experience that connects you with the soul of The Hague.
