Herculaneum together with Pompeii, were violently affected by the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius. However, while Pompeii was buried under a layer of ash and lapilli, Herculaneum was covered under a huge mass of mud and volcanic debris. This huge solid mass allowed a better preservation of perishable materials like wood, remnants of food, fabrics, etc.
